So yesterday I learned from a Profitable Content article that Amex is now giving Amex Business Platinum (ABP) credit card holders a lovely $50 quarterly statement credit on Hilton purchases. (This now makes the ABP truly a free card to have from a frugal minded non-traveler perspective.)
I immediately wondered if I could somehow buy a gift card with it the $50 credit and asked my friend Derthsidious about it on Discord. He said he had already very recently done this, purchasing a $50 Hilton gift card with his ABP just the other day.
I was pleased that Derth informed me that he was successful with his online purchase of a $50 Hilton gift card. He was notified by Amex that it counted towards the $200 credit and will be reimbursed for it:
He also told me he thinks the statement credit of $50 will post in approximately two days.
Enrolling in the credit. Before purchasing the gift card, make sure to enroll for the $200 Hilton Statement Credit under the Amex Business Platinum card in the portal. ABP -> Rewards & Benefits tab -> Benefits tab -> Scroll Down -> Enroll -> Type in your Hilton account number — create a Hilton account first if you don’t have one yet -> Submit.
Where he bought it. So I then asked him some more details and he said he ordered the card from BuyHiltonGiftCards.com. He was already registered with the site having already created an account. He added the $50 gift card to his cart and proceeded to checkout. There is a $1.95 fee for shipping the physical gift card. So the total charge to his ABP was $51.95.
I did the same. So I proceeded doing the same, creating a new account and all with them. I ordered the $50 card for $51.95 on my ABP as well. Amex notified me a couple minutes later via email that the $51.95 charge was placed and it looked like the following:
I look forward to seeing the $50 credit from Amex as well. 😺
Update. Shortly after I published this article, an individual from RJ’s discord asked me a question which Hilton gift card was purchased: personal or business. I didn’t even notice the personal or business after clicking “Buy Card” link up at the top of the page. I see it now on the main page, below there is a “business” or “personal” question — silly if you ask me to have two variants of a gift card lol. Anyways, I asked me friend which card he got, which worked with the $50 statement credit and he said: personal.
Valuing the $200 in credits. My friend values the $200 in Amex Hilton Credits at 80%, YMMV. I however value it at around 65%. I am spoiled with Chase Hyatt getting local Hyatt rooms at around a 40% discount. Most likely I’ll be using these $50 cards for dining at Hilton perhaps. I don’t eat out often as it is four to six times more expensive versus making meals at home — fairly frugal as ya know.
Summarizing. I am thrilled about this credit! I think 65% valuation is fair for us here. 65% of $200 is $130 in value to us, which makes the ABP effectively free to have indefinitely! This of course assuming they keep the Dell credits, but I am not sure they will. This new Hilton credit is probably one of a few other travel related credits to come to the ABP and the Dell credits sadly might die! We’ll see!
Update 12/16/2024. My online Hilton gift card purchase also triggered the credit:
