The Wednesday Morning Weekly — October 9, 2024
So I noticed we were low on pork butt the other day after examining the contents of the chest freezer. Pork butt is a great affordable solution to beef roasts for stews, as well as for ground pork. Pulled barbecue pork butt is absolutely delicious as well — we are into BBQ here at home and have a Weber Smokey Mountain barbecue pit. Additionally with the ground pork, we can make various sausages including hot Italian sausage as well as chorizo.
We usually buy our pork butt in bulk at Sam’s Club because they usually have decent prices. However lately I notice they are quite a bit expensive at $2.28/lb:
We have a local discount grocer that has a sale each and every week. They put out an ad each Wednesday and I do check it online every Wednesday — particularly for discounts on meat. Today, I noticed they have pork butt at $1.52/lb. (1.38 * 1.1 = 1.52.) This is a substantial savings: 1.52/2.28 = 67% the cost, or 33% off!
They are sold 2 per package. We’ll be buying four packages of these for eight pork butts.
This will be good for a lot of BBQ pulled pork butt, stews and ground pork.
This saves us quite a bit on the grocery bill eating more pork and less beef. We often do mix ground pork and ground beef for meatloaves, meatballs, German inspired patties, etc.
I do want to add that stews made with pork butt taste every bit as delicious to us as with beef. One go to is to take the cubed pork butt and brown it and sauté along with a mirepoix (onion, celery, carrot). Then add a good amount of water and white wine, along with Herbs De Provence. Salt and Pepper towards end to taste. Extremely tender and flavorful .. hearty like a beef stew and all for $1.52 per pound!
