I have a US Bank Cash+ credit card as part of my 5%+ Customized Cashback Strategy. I use it primarily for Utilities but don’t get even close to the $2k quarterly spending cap — not even half that.
I learned from an acquaintance on RJ’s Profitable Content Pro discord channel that eBay purchases code as MCC 5311 — Department Stores on the US Bank Cash+ card.
As you know, you can activate two 5% categories each quarter on the Cash+ card. I activate Utilities of course but this time I also activated Department Stores, so this becomes my 5% CB card for eBay purchases — I normally pick Electronic Stores, but it is easy to find Apple and Best Buy gift cards at better discounts so I never really used it. I can’t say it is easy to find eBay gift cards at significantly greater discounts than 5%.
So the other day, I did my first purchase on eBay for this quarter. I bought a Paul Revere Tea Kettle, used for around $15. I paid for it with my US Bank Cash+ card. I just checked wtih US Bank after I got an alert that the transaction had posted. I downloaded CSV file of the latest transactions and imported it into the free LibreOffice Calc (spreadsheet) software and it does in fact show MCC 5311 — Department Stores!
I like shopping at eBay, usually for used quality items. I am frugal and can find a lot of great discounts there on necessities — especially with the auction process — saving a lot of extra money. I now have a permanent 5% CB card for eBay purchases for up to $2k per quarter — how exciting!
Btw, I also like redeeming the monthly ABG $20 office supply credit for $25 eBay eGift cards from Staples online. To me eBay gift cards are as good as cash since I buy necessities with them.
