DIY Liquid Stevia from Extract Powder

The Wednesday Morning Weekly

Making your own liquid stevia can be a huge money saver if you consume a lot of it. We save $453 per year making our own.

We do consume a lot of it since I am diabetic; we don’t keep grains and sugar here in the house. Btw, my BF lost like 65 lbs and kept it off for several years now since we changed to a low carb diet.

The best price per oz I could find for 16 oz of liquid stevia is $33.49. Which comes to $2.09 per fluid oz.

Instead of buying the above, we have for 1 1/2 years now bought the Bulk Supplements Stevia Extract Powder, 2.2 lbs (1kg) for $65. This 1 kg bag of Stevia Powder is good for 197 fl oz of liquid stevia in about the same concentration as the premade stuff we used to buy above. This comes out to be $0.33 per oz or about 16% of the cost of the premade stuff. This is a substantial savings!

We go through 1 kg bag of this powder in 9 months. (Again we use it for all our sweetening purposes as there is no sugar here in the house.) So we spend $65 in 9 months instead of $406. [0.16x = 65 -> x = 65/0.16 = 406.] This saves us $340 every nine months, which results in us saving $453 per year.

Now I realize most won’t use this much liquid stevia, but if you can save even $100 per year using that same bag of powder over a few years, that’s still a substantial savings!

Liquid Stevia Recipe from Extract Powder

DESCRIPTION:
Makes 17 fl oz of liquid stevia drops.  I use Bulk Supplements Stevia Extract Powder.

INGREDIENTS:
88 grams stevia powder extract
500 grams boiling filtered water

DIRECTIONS:
Tare a glass 1 quart measuring cup on the scale.  Carefully add 88g of the powder — be careful not to stir up the dust; wear a mask perhaps.  (Don’t ever pour it out of the bag as it will cause a toxic dust cloud, instead use a very large spoon to carefully scoop it out and gently pour into the glass measuring cup.) Tare the scale again, pour in 500 grams of boiling water while still on the scale.  Mix with a spoon. Wait 5 mins and come back and continue to mix it in.  Scrape the sides with the spoon/liquid.  All of it will dissolve fairly quickly.. Let cool and transfer to 16 oz bottle and a 4 oz glass amber bottle with dropper.  Store in fridge.

When needed, we transfer from the 16 oz brown glass bottle to a 4 oz glass bottle with glass dropper — using a stainless steel mini funnel we bought off Amazon for a few bucks; we also bought all the glass bottles/droppers from Amazon on the cheap as well.

Homemade Gatorade-like Recipe

DESCRIPTION:
This is zero calorie homemade lemon/lime (50/50) drink that tastes similar to Gatorade but much better as it is sugar free and uses real citrus juice not artificial flavors and citric acid.

INGREDIENTS:
2 droppers full liquid stevia
lemon juice — a few splashes to taste (We typically use bottled RealLime/GV)
lime juice — a few splashes to taste (We typically use bottled RealLime/GV)
pinch of salt
filtered water
8 ice cubes

DIRECTIONS: Take 1 quart mason jar and add in all the ingredients in the same order listed above. Fill with water to about 75% full. Swirl the water before topping off to cause the salt to dissolve. Add the ice cubes. Top off with water. Put mason jar cap on and invert a few times to distribute the cooling from the ice cubes and to further dissolve the pinch of salt.
